A flagship scheme to provide children in Wales with free laptop computers has been scrapped after it emerged every new machine was costing more than £700 to supply.
The Welsh Government was last night accused of “frittering money away” on a policy destined to fail at a time when school funding is scarce.
Written answers to Shadow Education Minister Angela Burns revealed that £662,364 had been spent on free laptops since the scheme’s launch in March last year.
But only 943 of the 1,200 computers promised by Labour Education Minister Leighton Andrews have been bought, at a considerable cost to the taxpayer.
Dw i’n meddwl efallai bod e’n syniad da ond bosib cael gliniaduron a meddalwedd am lot llai na £700. (e.e. $200 yn y trydydd byd gyda meddalwedd rydd ac am ddim).
Er dw i ddim yn siŵr beth mae’r cyfanswm £662,364 yn cynrychioli. (Mae’r £700 yn dod o’r cyfanswm rhannwyd â’r 943 o liniaduron.)
